Practice-based Activity Competencies

Discriminate, and then identify relationships, between routes of delivery, chemical composition and dosage forms

Understand and apply the concept of compounding by composition applicable to powder blends, and powder-to-liquid and  liquid-to-liquid solution, suspensions and emulsions

 

Prepare capsules, suppositories, troches, lollipops, medication sticks, beverages, pastes, ointments, creams, gels and lotions in compliance with quality assurance, regulatory, pharmacological and pharmacy practice guidelines

 

Recognize the additional regulatory agencies and laws that apply to compounding and formulate plans to properly abide by these laws

 

Prepare topical and transdernal dosage forms in compliance with quality assurance, regulatory, pharmacological and pharmacy practice guidelines

 

Recognize pharmaceutical, clinical, and administrative differences of the hormone therapy, pain and veterinary niche markets in order to be better equipped to evaluate and prepare formulations, make clinical decisions, provide clinical information, and make sound marketing and legal decisions regarding this niche

 

Explain taste physiology and variables involved in flavoring in order to make sound flavoring decisions that maximize patient acceptance and compliance

 

Apply key business and marketing concepts to bring about, and maintain, a successful launch of a new or expanding pharmacy compounding niche market

 

Communicate key messages to, and building relationships with, a target market that results in a successful product and / or service launch

 

Establish Beyond-use Dates in compliance with USP 795 regulatory compliance guidelines

 

Recognize importance of proper communication and information gathering in order to ensure patient satisfaction, compliance and ultimately positive therapeutic outcomes

 

Evaluate and create strategies for developing follow-up programs and additional services that add additional value to their practice

 

Generate and recognize questions relevant to compounded prescriptions and be able to efficiently choose information resources to adequately address formulation, clinical, and administrative concerns related to them

 

Formulate a comprehensive and strategic plan of action as it pertains to clinical, administrative, marketing and financial initiatives related to a non-sterile compounding practice

 

To practically apply the basic-to-advanced laboratory or preparatory techniques used in the extemporaneous preparation of non-sterile dosage forms of the solid, semi-solid and liquid states-of-matter with a specific focus on blends and mixtures (solutions and dispersions; emulsions and suspensions) for oral, rectal, vaginal, urethral, topical and transdermal routes of delivery.
